What it is

Structural engineering services that keep your project safe, compliant and moving

If you’re planning building work in Liverpool that affects the structure, such as knocking through a wall, extending a kitchen, converting a loft, or developing a larger scheme, you’ll almost certainly need a structural engineer. ASG Consulting provides structural engineering services across Liverpool, Merseyside and the North West, covering everything from a single beam calculation in a Victorian terrace to structural input on commercial and industrial projects.

As structural engineers Liverpool clients trust, we’re a RICS-regulated practice based on St. James Street in the city centre, which means our advice comes with the professional standards, insurance and accountability that building control officers, lenders and solicitors expect. We produce the calculations, drawings and coordination your project needs, and we explain them in plain English, not engineering jargon.

Who needs a structural engineer?

You don’t need to be a developer to need structural engineering. Most of our enquiries come from Liverpool homeowners doing exactly the kind of work you’d expect: removing a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room, adding a rear extension, or opening up a chimney breast.

Homeowners: extensions, wall removals, loft conversions and alterations

Developers: structural design and review across residential and commercial schemes

Architects: calculations and design input to support your drawings

Contractors: beam sizing, connection details and site support

Commercial clients: offices, retail, industrial and mixed-use buildings

Homebuyers: structural assessment when a survey flags cracking or movement

Domestic to industrial

What our structural engineering service includes

Structural calculations and drawings for steel beams (RSJs), lintels, load-bearing wall removals, extensions, loft conversions and new builds, prepared to satisfy building control.

Structural design input for new buildings, alterations and renovations, from concept through to construction.

Structural surveys and inspections: if you’ve spotted cracking, movement, bowing walls or sagging floors, we can assess the cause and recommend a proportionate fix. For suspected subsidence or damp-related structural issues, this pairs naturally with our building pathology service.
Structural engineer house survey support: buying a home and the mortgage valuation or RICS survey has flagged a structural concern? We provide targeted structural assessments, and if what you actually need first is a full property survey, we’ll say so honestly. Sometimes our RICS Level 3 Building Survey is the better starting point.
Review and verification of another consultant’s design information.

Building control coordination: we liaise with Liverpool City Council and the building control teams of surrounding local authorities, as well as approved inspectors, so your paperwork doesn’t hold up your build.

Common questions about structural engineers in Liverpool

Yes. Removing or altering a load-bearing wall requires structural calculations to size the supporting beam (usually a steel RSJ) and padstones, and building control approval. Your builder will need our calculations before work starts; most Liverpool building control teams won’t sign off a knock-through without them.

A building surveyor assesses the overall condition of a property, covering damp, roofing, defects and more, while a structural engineer designs and assesses the load-bearing structure itself. If you’re buying a house, you usually start with a survey; if you’re altering a structure or a survey has flagged movement, you need an engineer. As a firm that does both, we’ll point you to the right one, not just the one you asked for.

For most structural work, including beams, wall removals, extensions, loft conversions, yes. Building control will ask for calculations demonstrating the design is safe. We prepare these as standard and can liaise with the council or approved inspector on your behalf.

Yes. If a mortgage valuation or homebuyer report has flagged cracking, movement or subsidence, we can carry out a targeted structural inspection. If the property hasn’t been surveyed at all yet, a RICS Level 3 Building Survey may be the better first step; it covers the whole building, and we can add structural engineering input where needed.
